Photos from 1951–1952

Beryl picked out three interesting photos from an album borrowed from Angela Spencer (Weed). If anyone would like to contribute some captions or comments then please contact the website.

French Afternoon — Le Cid — February 1952

This photo was originally captioned as 'El Cid' but Albert Bridge has pointed it out it was actually 'Le Cid', the opera composed by Jules Massenet with a French libretto. The production was directed by Sam Elengorn and the action was mimed with the chorus singing the libretto. That is Albert in the centre of the photo.

Staff Concert — "The Magic Boot" — April 1952

1st XI Football 1951-1952

Back: Robin White, Albert Bridge, John Fenn, Peter Mottley, David Tyler, Brian Knight
Front: Colin Walker, John Challis, Peter Ellacott, Brian Newlands, Ron Hampton

Brian Knight contributed this photo of the school football team. He says, 'I think I have all the surnames, maybe not in the right places, but because I was in the fourth form at this time I was in awe of some of these gents and did not have the temerity to address them by their first names so some of these are lacking.' Dave Ratliff suggested the first name Brian for Newlands.

David Day (known as 'Deeday' or 'Ticker' during his time at the school) has written in to give Robin White, John Fenn and David Tyler their first names, and also to point out that Robin and David had been swapped over.

Back row: Mr Bartlett, Mr Leeming, Dr Cleverdon, Mr Hall, Mr Clark, Mr Akhurst, Mr Elengorn, Mr Bradley, Mr Doubleday, Mr Woodward.
Middle Row: Mr Wilkinson, Mr Long, Miss Young, Miss Hill, Miss Horrex, Miss Henderson, Miss Taylor, Miss Davis, Dr Galin, Mr Lowe.
Front row: Miss Roberts, Miss Emery, Mr Quartermaine, Mr Champion, Miss Fothergill, Miss Staples, Miss Haswell.

This photo of the staff is dated by Beryl Cushion as 1952. She supplied all but three of the names. Malcolm Blunden suggests that it is Miss Hill (Geography) between Miss Young and Miss Horrex. Pamela Bamber (nee Weed) identified Miss Brenda Davis and Beryl herself came back with the name of Mr Bartlett.
